Opens Rugby League Grand Final
The Under 18 team defeated Murgon in the final of the Bronco’s Challenge, at Lyle Vidler Oval yesterday. The boys gave away an early start to the visitors, with Murgon running away to a ten-point lead in the opening minutes of the match. This was mainly due to poor discipline and a nervous start on our behalf. Soon the boys settled into the match, and played simple straight forward percentage football. Kingaroy had Murgon beaten in the forwards and needed to shut down their left edge. A team shuffle and settling into the game plan saw Kingaroy scoring 3 tries in 20 minutes. Going into the break the boys led 14-10.
The tries kept coming in the second half but the conversions didn’t. In all the Kingaroy team scored 8 tries but only kicked 2 conversions. Kingaroy were run out winners at 36-24. Man of the match was Joe Meikle who put in a tremendous effort at fullback; defusing the Murgon attack, leading with some inspirational runs and taking with consummate ease a spiralling bomb which would have challenged Selwyn Cobbo. All of the boys were inspirational school leaders, true champions on and off the field. To win a grand final in their final year of schooling will be a remarkable dream come true for many of our boys.

Rugby Grand Final
Meet the Teacher - Mr Jamie Shirlaw
I moved to Kingaroy in 1995 with my family and enrolled into year 10 at Kingaroy SHS, completing the senior years of high school here. My favourite subjects at school were science, music and graphics. In year 12 I joined the school Rugby Union team coached by Mr Jones. This made a big difference to the rest of my life as I am still associated with Rugby as the President of the local Rugby Union club the South Burnett Thrashers.
In 1998 I moved to Brisbane and started my Bachelor of Education at Griffith University. My plan was to only focus on science subjects, but soon fell in love with Maths. I changed my plan to major in Chemistry and Mathematics. My first teaching job out of university was at Cairns State High. I taught maths and science there for three years before moving back to Kingaroy to work at KSHS.
I was lucky enough to work alongside my teachers from high school. Mr Jones and Ms Sudull who are still on staff were teachers of mine. Mr Jones was my science teacher and rugby coach and Ms Sudull taught me Music and as a result convinced me to join the school choir.
After teaching back in Kingaroy for two years I decided to move to the UK to work and travel. The first school I worked in was Walmer Science college, a school with a focus on Science on the South East coast of Kent in the UK. I then moved to The Westlands school in Sittingbourne in the North of Kent. My final school was Enfield Grammar School, a school in North London founded in 1558. This was an amazing experience getting to teach students in a very different schooling system on the other side of the world.
When I returned to Australia in 2010 I completed a year contract at MacGregor SHS before returning to Kingaroy SHS the following year. I have taught Maths and Science at Kingaroy SHS since then. I am now at a point where my past students have returned back at KSHS as teachers. My past students who are now teachers here are Ms Cush and Ms Hilsley.

Drama MovieWorld Excursion
Year 10 Drama students – plus some keen Year 12 students travelled to Movieworld to complete the Lights, Camera, Action program.
The students participated in a workshop on the day focusing on confidence, characterisation and improvisation. The students really enjoyed the workshop and lots of students were asked to get up and volunteer on working on these skills.
Students then walked in the park and spoke to all the entertainers – particularly focusing on characterisation.

Mountain Bike Team
On Sunday some of our Kingaroy State High School students had a training ride in preparation for the upcoming Sunshine Coast Schools MTB Competition in week 6.
They rode at the McEuen Forestry trails in Wondai and were joined by a staff member and student from Nanango SHS. Members of the South Burnett MTB Club gave some skill and technique advice, and it was great to see riders gaining confidence on some of the more technical features.
Gamez Knight - Dungeons & Dragons Supplies
A huge thank you to Alex from Gamez Knight for donating so many incredible resources to our school Dungeons and Dragons Club. The students were estatic and can't wait to put all the items to good use!

Aussie Angus Brangus Sale
Kingaroy SHS Palyah stud will be selling two bulls through the “Aussie Angus Brangus Sale” to be held at 11:00 am on the 20th of August at the Coolabunia saleyards. The profits the school receives from the sale will be reinvested into the schools agricultural education programs, so this is a great opportunity to pick up a quality bull and support agricultural education at the same time.
If there are students or parents who would like to help with serving morning tea and lunch on the day, we are chasing volunteers so please give Mr Langton or Mr Webster a call at the school.
