2024 Kingaroy Highlights #2
Principal's Message
Senior School News
Congratulations to all students who have made a “STRONG START”. Every day really counts to ensure student success in Years 11 and 12. All students should have a study plan, and have checked that there is balance with school / work / other commitments.
Year 11 subject changes have been completed, and all students should be working hard in their chosen subjects. Any required changes can be made at the end of Unit 1; for implementation in Unit 2, beginning Monday, 20 May.
At Year 12 camp, 14-16 February, at the Sunshine Coast, 104 students and staff completed a variety of activities, had a great time, bonded with their cohort and further developed many life skills. Congratulations to Mrs Krysty Connelly and the staff who helped make it a highlight of their final school year.
A reminder that students driving to school are required to complete the STUDENT DRIVER AND PASSENGER PERMISSION FORM and return it to the Office.
Investiture ceremony is 10.20am, Monday 19 February. Parents and caregivers of student leaders are invited to join us.
Year 12 Parent Information Night is 6pm, Tuesday 20 February, in KPAC.
I look forward to seeing you there.

Year 7 News
Thank you to all parents and caregivers for the work you have done in both ensuring your Year 7 student is at school every day, and with all their equipment and correct uniform.
The Semester Assessment Calendar will be available over the next day or two and this should be extremely helpful for all students to organise their time, as much as it will help parents/caregivers to assist students too. At times there are multiple assessments due in one week or even on one day. When the assessment is an assignment, this will be worked on, and largely completed in class as well as for homework in the days and weeks leading up to the due date. Therefore, most of the work, if not all, is completed before the due date.
One noticeable difference for students this year is that the due date is just that. There is no negotiation (excepting major illness or family incident) and every student is expected to meet the due dates, as well as draft dates.
It is often a challenge for students to approach their teacher to ask for help outside class time. However, we expect that all high school students will use their initiative and seek help when needed. If the class teacher is not available, please encourage your student to see the Head of Department of that subject.
How can I assist my child’s successful move to Kingaroy SHS?
For many of our Year 7 students, there is a step up in expectations. Below are some ideas that may assist parents and caregivers to help your student to have success.
Celebrate their learning at home – It is the essence of resilience to grow through challenges and you can help your child identify their personal growth, reflecting on their achievements each day. Some questions might be, “What is one thing you learnt today?” or “You had History today. Can you tell me one interesting or unexpected thing you learnt today?” |
Connect with friends – Encourage your child to reach out and make contact with a friend during weekends so they connect and look out for one another during the school day. |
School routines are essential to assist your child’s successful start in the school each year, and term. It may take a few days to adjust to school routine. Talk with your child about what they are enjoying, doing, and what is the most challenging. |
Transport/school pick-up – Check with your student that they are comfortable with the transport routine. Is all okay on the bus? Is your pick-up location okay for them to get to? |
Healthy routines – supporting your child with healthy routines includes beginning the day with some breakfast and some daily physical activity. It is also vital for students to get a good night’s sleep and put the devices away (or set to ‘do not disturb’) each evening. There are numerous studies that support an improved school day as well as learning ability and mental health being linked to adequate sleep, exercise and healthy eating. |
Academic regulation – You can continue to support your child’s learning by reminding them that the following questions are great to use for each lesson: - Do I know WHAT task I have to complete? - Do I understand what ORDER I need to complete the task? - Do I know HOW to do each task? If your child responds with a ‘no’ to any question, please encourage them to speak with their teacher. |
Apple support apps (if you have access) – Family Sharing makes it easy for you and up to five family members to share Apple Books, App Store purchases, and Apple Music family plan and iCloud storage plan. You can set up ‘Do Not Disturb’, can silence calls, alerts and notifications to increase your child’s learning focus. Screen Time lets you know how much time you and your children spend on apps, websites and more. This way you can make informed decisions about how you use your devices and set limits if you would like to. |

Deputy Principal
NAPLAN 2024
Each year, our Year 7 and Year 9 students sit the NAPLAN test that gives us a point in time idea about their literacy and numeracy proficiency. This then allows teachers to ensure that where there are gaps, they can be addressed.
This year, the testing will take place between 13-25 March. Our students will undertake the tests during class time, with all tests taking place online. Please note that they will use school devices for the testing.
We ask that students give the tests their best effort for each of the four tests. They will complete writing, reading, language conventions as well as numeracy testing.
See the attached flyer for further information.

Health News
The internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. Teenagers spend an average of 14.4 hours a week (2 hours per day) online, participating in a range of activities including watching TV, listening to music, chatting with friends and online gaming.
This quick video from eSafety shows a snapshot of how young people are engaging online.
There are 4 main kinds of internet risks for teenagers:
- Content risks – seeing material that they might find upsetting, disgusting or otherwise uncomfortable, especially if they encounter it accidentally.
- Contact risks – encountering adults posing as children online, strangers who persuade teenagers to send them photos or videos of themselves of meet them in real life, and online scammers.
- Conduct risks – behaving in inappropriate, hurtful or disrespectful ways or being the victim of this kind of behaviour.
- Contract risks – signing up to unfair contracts, subscriptions or terms and conditions that they aren’t aware of or don’t fully understand.
eSafety encourages you to take three simple actions when approaching online safety: Connect. Reflect. Protect.
Connect safely by keeping apps and devices secure and reviewing your privacy settings regularly.
Reflect on how your actions online may affect others or your safety.
Protect yourself and others by visiting eSafety.gov.au to find out how to stay safe online and report online abuse.
The Raising Children Network discuss more options on how to protect young people online.
